Kennesaw, November 26, 2013 ─ VJI President and CEO Valerie H. Jordan and Senior Tax Consultant Chris Wiggins recently met with the entire engineering staff and three key corporate tax managers in late October to begin work on a sales and use tax overpayment review for a 3-million-square-foot manufacturing plant in the Southeast. “Our client was very helpful in setting up this initial visit and meetings so that we could see the people that we would need to talk to during our review,” says Jordan. “The meetings were scheduled to coincide with a training meeting for the plant engineers, which made our visit less time-consuming for our client’s busy staff.” During the training session, Jordan and Wiggins were able to contribute by answering questions and addressing tax-related concerns.
After the meetings, Jordan and Wiggins were led on a day-long tour of the massive facility by one of the plant engineers. The lengthy tour was needed so that Jordan and Wiggins could understand all of the products made and processes used to make them. “Normally, we don’t take a whole day to tour a plant, but this case was special and required a thorough tour so that we can recover the maximum amount of overpayments for our client,” says Wiggins. “The plant and warehouse were huge and the manufacturing process was complicated, so we paid close attention as we looked at hundreds of machines that occupied over 70 acres of floor space.”
“When our review is complete,” says Jordan, “we will be able to address many of the things we learned during the visit at the free training seminar that we will present to our client’s accounting, purchasing, and engineering staff. The meetings and tour took some time to coordinate, but it was the perfect beginning for a major overpayment review project and was well worth the effort. I feel that we’ve created a great team spirit for the project, which will benefit everyone at the end of the day. I can’t say enough about how our client appreciated and understood the importance of getting this project off to a good start. I hope we’re able to work with them on another project sometime in the future.”
