Mississippi gets credit from most economic historians for imposing our nation’s first sales tax in 1930. Most other states followed over the next 30+ years. Today all but five states and the District of Columbia impose a sales tax. The NOMAD states – New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska, and Delaware – do not impose a state sales tax.

Happy Manufacturing Day

By far, the single, most-appreciated fringe benefit that I have enjoyed (even above the accumulation of frequent traveler points) thus far in my thirty-year career in sales and use tax, is the plant tour. I thoroughly enjoy donning up in a hard hat, safety goggles and steel-toe shoes to tour the factory floor. I like to see first-hand, things being made.

Nexus Doesn’t Have to Cause Nightmares

Nexus. It’s a word that causes anything from extreme anxiety to a disquieting unease for many tax professionals today. With many states setting increasingly aggressive sales and use tax nexus standards (sometimes of questionable constitutionality) it’s understandable why many tax professionals are so worried about their company’s potential nexus exposure. After all, the consequences of not paying taxes to a state in which you rightfully have nexus can be quite severe. What if your company is suddenly held liable for millions of dollars of sales tax for sales into a state that you always assumed your company didn’t have nexus in? It’s the kind of thing that can keep a CFO up at night.

Kennesaw, October 3, 2016 ―In honor of Public Safety Week, VJI Client Development Manager Courtney Cole attended the October First Monday Breakfast hosted by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. The breakfast kicked off the week by allowing the community to show appreciation for all members of public safety personnel within Cobb County. The 2016 Public Safety Employee of the Year award, individual and group awards of Merit, Distinguished Achievement award, and Medal of Valor were all presented at the event.
